13.56 MHz RFID proximity reader for access control, Wiegand 34, IP66, SecureEntry-CR20HF

GTIN: 5907614668846 · SKU: SecureEntry-CR20HF

The SecureEntry-CR20HF is a compact proximity reader for 13.56 MHz RFID cards and fobs. It does not make access decisions itself: when a card is held to it, it reads the card number and sends it over the Wiegand 34 interface to an access controller or a time recorder, which decides whether to release the door. The fully potted IP66 housing resists water and dust and works from −25 to 60 °C, so the reader can be mounted outdoors, at a gate or on a building entrance.

How the reader works

  • The reader is a Wiegand reader only. It has no memory of users and no relay. The card number goes to a separate device, such as an access controller, an electronic lock with a Wiegand input or an HDWR time recorder, and that device releases the door
  • When a card is read, the LED turns green and the buzzer beeps while the Wiegand data is sent
  • The controller can drive the LED and buzzer through the two optional wires: pulling the LED wire low turns the LED green, pulling the buzzer wire low sounds the buzzer
  • The output format is Wiegand 34 bits (factory default); Wiegand 26 is available as an option. The controller must be set to the same format

Installation

SecureEntry-CR20HF installation: step 1 the two screw holes A and C and the cable hole B drilled in the wall, step 2 the back plate screwed to the wall with the cable led through hole B, step 3 the front cover fitted
  1. Drill two holes for the screws (A, C) and one hole for the cable (B) in the wall.
  2. Place the rubber wall plugs in holes A and C.
  3. Lead the cable through hole B and connect it to the controller as described below, with the power off.
  4. Screw the reader to the wall with the two screws.
  5. Finally, fit the front cover onto the reader.

Wiring

The reader has six wires. Four are needed for operation, the brown and yellow wires are optional.

SecureEntry-CR20HF connection diagram: the six wires red, black, green, white, brown and yellow go to the +12V, GND, D0, D1, LED and BZ terminals of the access controller
  • Connect red and black to the 12 V DC supply of the controller, and green and white to its Wiegand D0 and D1 inputs. The reader and the controller must share the ground
  • Connect brown and yellow only if the controller has LED and buzzer outputs and you want it to confirm access on the reader
  • Make the connections with the power off and switch on only after checking every wire

Reading a cardThe LED turns green and the buzzer beeps; at the same time the reader sends the Wiegand signal.
External LED controlWhen the input voltage on the LED wire is low, the LED turns green.
External buzzer controlWhen the input voltage on the buzzer wire is low, the buzzer sounds.
Wiegand data outputWiegand 34 bits as the factory default, Wiegand 26 bits available as an option.

Troubleshooting

  • The card is not read. Hold it within 5 cm of the front of the reader. The reader reads 13.56 MHz cards only; 125 kHz EM cards need the SecureEntry-CR20LF.
  • The reader beeps but the door does not open. The reader has done its job; the decision is made by the controller. Check that the card is registered in the controller and that the controller is set to Wiegand 34.
  • The controller receives wrong or no card numbers. Check that green goes to D0 and white to D1, not swapped, that the reader and the controller share the ground, and that both use the same Wiegand format.
  • No LED and no beep at all. Check the supply on red and black: the reader needs 9–18 V DC.
  • The LED or buzzer behaves unexpectedly. The brown and yellow wires are driven by the controller. Leave them unconnected if the controller has no LED and buzzer outputs.

Frequently asked questions

Is the SecureEntry-CR20HF a standalone access controller or just a reader?
It is a reader only. It reads the card number and sends it over Wiegand 34 to a separate access controller or time recorder. It does not make access decisions itself and does not store user data, so you need a controller with a Wiegand input to define the access rules.
Which cards are compatible with the SecureEntry-CR20HF?
13.56 MHz RFID cards and key fobs with MIFARE-compatible chips, read from up to 5 cm. Cards working at 125 kHz (EM) are not supported; for those use the SecureEntry-CR20LF.
Can it be used outdoors all year round?
Yes. The fully potted housing is rated IP66 against dust and strong water jets, and the reader works from −25 to 60 °C, so it can be mounted permanently next to doors, gates and barriers.
What is the difference between the SecureEntry-CR20HF and the SecureEntry-CR20LF?
The RFID frequency: the CR20HF reads 13.56 MHz cards and sends them over Wiegand 34, the CR20LF reads 125 kHz EM cards over Wiegand 26. Both have the same IP66 housing, wiring and installation.
Can I use it with an HDWR time recorder?
Yes, with a recorder that has a Wiegand input set to the same format. Mount the reader outdoors and the recorder indoors, and connect the two over the four main wires.
What are the brown and yellow wires for?
They let the controller drive the reader's green LED and buzzer, for example to confirm that access was granted. They are optional and can be left unconnected.
