- Connect the USB cable to the USB interface at the back of the printer and to the computer. For network printing, connect the Ethernet interface to your local network with a network cable.
- Connect the power supply to the power socket at the back of the printer, then plug the power cord into an electrical outlet.
Make sure the printer is switched off before you connect the power supply to the power socket at the back of the printer.
Loading labels
- Fixing plate
- Paper roll
- Fixing plate
- Print side up
- 1" paper roll shaft
To load the labels:
- Mount the label roll in the paper supply kit — slide the 1" paper roll shaft through the roll core and fit the fixing plates on both sides. If the roll core is 1", remove the 1.5" core adapter from the fixing plates.
- Push the cover hooks forward with both hands to open the printer cover.
- Place the label roll on the label holder with the print side facing up.
- Pass the labels through the paper guide and pull them over the rubber roller.
- Adjust the label guides so they lightly touch the edges of the label backing.
- Close the printer cover slowly and make sure it locks securely.
- Calibrate the label sensor for the media type you use — with the power-on function or with the Diagnostic Tool (both described below).
Recalibrate the gap / black mark sensor every time you change the media. Make sure the printer cover is closed tightly — a cover that is not closed properly results in poor print quality.
LED indicator and button
The printer has one button and one indicator that lights up in three colours. Pressing the button — on its own or together with the power switch — starts printer functions such as feeding paper, pausing, calibrating the label sensor, printing the self-test and initializing the printer.
LED indicator
| LED colour | Description |
|---|---|
| Blue (steady) | Power on, the printer is ready to print. |
| Blue (blinking) | The printer is downloading data or is paused. |
| Purple | The printer is formatting data. |
| Red (steady) | The printer cover is open. |
| Red (blinking) | A printing error has occurred, e.g. out of paper, paper jam or memory error. |
Button functions
- Feeding paper — when the printer is ready (LED steady blue), press the button to advance the paper by one label.
- Pausing printing — while the printer is printing, press the button to pause the job. The power indicator blinks blue. Press the button again to resume printing.
Power-on functions
The printer has four power-on functions for setting up and testing the hardware. To start one:
- Switch the printer off.
- Hold the feed button and switch the printer on.
- Keep holding the button while the indicator cycles through its colours and release it when the indicator shows the function you need.
Indicator colour cycle: purple → blue → red (blinks 5 times) → purple (blinks 5 times) → blue (blinks 5 times) → blue (steady).
| Power-on function | Release the button when the indicator is |
|---|---|
| 1. Gap / black mark sensor calibration | blinking red |
| 2. Gap / black mark sensor calibration, self-test printout and debug mode | blinking purple (after the red sequence) |
| 3. Printer initialization (restore factory settings) | blinking blue |
| 4. Skip the AUTO.BAS program | steady blue |
Gap/black mark sensor calibration
This function sets the sensitivity of the label sensor. Calibrate the sensor whenever you load a new roll with a different specification or after initializing the printer to factory settings. The calibration uses the last set sensor type (gap or black mark) as the reference. By default the printer is set to gap calibration.
- Make sure the labels are loaded correctly.
- Switch the printer off.
- Hold the feed button and switch the printer on.
- Release the button when the indicator blinks red.
Whether the sensor detects gaps or black marks depends on the GAP or BLINE command sent to the printer — or on the media type selected in the Diagnostic Tool. For details on the GAP and BLINE commands see the TSPL2 programming manual.
Calibration with self-test and debug mode
- Make sure the labels are loaded correctly.
- Switch the printer off.
- Hold the feed button and switch the printer on.
- Release the button when the indicator blinks purple (after the red sequence).
- The printer calibrates the sensor, prints the self-test and enters debug mode.
- Switch the printer off and on again to return to normal printing mode.
Before calibrating, confirm the label type to be detected (gap or black mark) with the Diagnostic Tool or the GAP / BLINE command.
Self-test
After the sensor calibration the printer prints its self-test. Use it before connecting the printer to a computer to confirm that the printer works properly, to check the print quality of the print head and to see the internal settings of the printer. The self-test printout contains:
- Print head check pattern
- Model and firmware version
- Serial number
- Print head mileage
- Checksum
- Serial port settings
- Character set (code page)
- Country code
- Print speed
- Print density
- Paper size (width, height)
- Black mark or gap size (vertical gap, offset)
- Sensor strength
- Information about stored files
Debug mode
After the self-test the printer enters debug mode. In this mode all received data are printed as machine code: the ASCII strings on the left are the data received by the printer and the values on the right are the same data in hexadecimal form. This function is intended for users and engineers who debug programs.
A 4" (100 mm) wide label is required to print all debug mode data. To leave debug mode, switch the printer off and on again, or press the feed button to return to the ready state.
Printer initialization
Printer initialization clears downloaded files from the memory (DRAM) and restores the print parameters to the factory settings.
- Switch the printer off.
- Hold the feed button and switch the printer on.
- Release the button when the indicator blinks blue.
- The printer resets, the indicator blinks purple once and then lights steady blue — the printer is ready.
After initialization the printer uses the following default settings:
| Parameter | Default value |
|---|---|
| Speed | 152.0 mm/s (6 ips) (203 dpi) |
| Density | 8 |
| Label width | 4" (100 mm) |
| Label height | 7.9" (180 mm) |
| Sensor type | Gap sensor |
| Gap setting | 0.16" (4.0 mm) |
| Print direction | 0 |
| Reference point | 0,0 (upper left corner) |
| Offset | 0 |
| Tear-off mode | On |
| Peel-off mode | Off |
| Code page | 850 |
| Country code | 001 |
| Clear flash memory | No |
| IP address | DHCP |
Skipping the AUTO.BAS program
The TSPL2 command language lets you load an auto-execute file (AUTO.BAS) into the flash memory. The printer runs it automatically every time it is switched on. Use this function to ignore the AUTO.BAS file at power-on.
- Switch the printer off.
- Hold the feed button and switch the printer on.
- Release the button when the indicator lights steady blue.
- The printer skips the AUTO.BAS program.
